Number sense essentially refers to a student's “fluidity and flexibility with numbers,” (Gersten & Chard, 2001).
He/She has sense of what numbers mean, understands their relationship to one another, is able to perform mental math, understands symbolic representations, and can use those numbers in real world situations.

VOCABULARYexpression: Numbers, symbols and operators, such as + and x, grouped together that show the value of something. (example: 2x3 is an expression)
rounding: adjusting a numbers value to a certain level of accuracy. The adjustment is made up or down to an appropriate place value. The number is then changed to the nearest multiple of that place value. (think: close to) place value: how the position or place of a digit in a numeral determines its value. (8 ones = 8, 8 tens=80 etc.) |
